Description

Star Trek™ 25TH Anniversary is an electronic handheld LCD game released by Konami in 1991 where you take control of the USS Enterprise on a emergency mission to evacuate the inhabitants of a distant planet that is being attacked by the Klingons.

Gameplay

The crew of the Starship Enterprise have been ordered by Starfleet to proceed at warp speed to planet Z25X for an emergency evacuation of the planet's inhabitants after being attacked by the Klingons.

The game consists of 3 levels of increasing difficulty. Each level consists of 2 stages. In the first stage the Enterprise will be confronted by Klingon warships which must be destroyed before advancing to the second stage where survivors on the planet have to be beamed to safety aboard the Enterprise.

BATTLE STAGE

In the Battle Stage the Enterprise must fend off attacks from Klingon warships. You can use the shields of the Enterprise to block any Klingon disruptor fire. However, the shields are limited to an area that covers only a part of the saucer section at any one time, so you'll need to move the shields using the LEFT and RIGHT control buttons to block any incoming fire.

Each time you fail to block enemy fire you'll take a direct hit and one of the Enterprise's major systems will be damaged which will affect the ships operations.

                ENGINE
If damaged it takes longer for the ship to restore power.

                BRIDGE
If damaged shield movement slows down.

                WEAPONS
If damaged photon torpodoes won't always fire.

                SENSORS
If damaged Klingon ships will sometimes not be visible.

                SHIELDS
If damaged the size of the shields is reduced.

If all five systems are damaged at the same time, the game is over. Before that happens, wait for Mr. Spock to appear. If you press the UP or DOWN button when he does, one of your damaged systems will be repaired.

To attack the Klingon ships you can FIRE photon torpedoes at them but only when the Power is at maximum (five bars). To advance to the rescue stage you must destroy one Klingon ship in Level One, three ships in Level Two, and six ships in Level Three.

RESCUE STAGE

After destroying the required number of Klingon ships, you enter the Rescue Stage where the Enterprise must orbit the planet and evacuate the inhabitants by beaming them on board. However, the planet has been overrun by the Klingons, who have taken control of its six torpedo cannons and the planetary shields.

Fortunately, there is a gap in the shields through which you can beam up survivors provided the Enterprise is directly over the gap. Use the LEFT and RIGHT control buttons to position the Enterprise above the gap (represented by a rotating segment) and press the TRANSPORT button to beam survivors aboard. You'll need at least two power units to beam up ONE survivor. If you have four or more units, you will beam up TWO survivors at the same time.

You must also rotate your ship's position using the LEFT and RIGHT control buttons to avoid cannon fire from the planet. If hit, the ship takes one unit of damage. If you take five units of damage, the game is over. However, like in the battle stage, if Spock appears, you can press the UP or DOWN button to repair one unit of damage.

The top left of the screen will keep track of the number of survivors you need to "Beam Up" and the "Count Down" of the time left in which to do so. In Level One, you must rescue 20 survivors in 60 time units. In Level Two, 30 survivors in 80 time units. And in Level Three, 40 survivors in 90 time units. If you rescue all the survivors within the time limit you'll advance to the next level.

Special Features

To give you the feeling of being right on the bridge of the Enterprise, the game includes special sound effects and talking commands featuring classic phrases like "Fire photon torpedoes", "Beam me up, Scotty" and "Warp Speed". Listen carefully and obey these commands throughout the mission.
