Description

BMX Flyer is a challenging side-scrolling handheld electronic game released by Grandstand in 1983 featuring a backlit multi-color LCD screen.

Gameplay

The object of the game is to get your BMX Super Rider to avoid of as many obstacles as possible including Mad Riders, crows, cans and a gangster dropping bombs out of a helicopter, all while racing across an uneven dirt track.

The game starts with three Super Riders. Each rider starts out with 6 bars of energy. Each time you use the DIRT or JUMP buttons, your energy is reduced by one bar. When all your energy is used up, you will not be able to perform these actions. You can replenish your energy by collecting water found in tanks along the route. Each water tank collected will add two bars of energy to your meter.

You can use the WHEELIE button to avoid small gaps in the road as well as to avoid cans in your path, bombs thrown from the helicopter and attacks by Mad Riders from behind. You can also use the DIRT button to slow down Mad Riders behind you.

Use the DOWN button to descend into large gaps in the road or use the JUMP button to jump over them. You'll also need to use the JUMP button to avoid any Mad Riders in front of you. You can hold the JUMP button to stay airborne for as long you need, but be careful, the bike will eventually automatically drop down to the ground after a certain distance. Occasionally a girl will appear in a balloon. If you JUMP up and touch her you earn 100 bonus points and get one bar of energy back.

Every time a Super Rider successfully completes a lap 100 bonus points will be awarded for every bar of energy remaining. The speed of the game increases with each lap. An extra Super Rider is added every 10000 points. The game ends when there are no more Super Riders remaining.

Tips & Tricks

Use the WHEELIE button whenever possible to avoids hazards or to cross over small gaps in the road since it doesn't use up any energy. Using the JUMP or DIRT buttons on the other hand will use up valuable energy.

Pressing the DOWN button to descend into larger holes in the road requires good timing. Press the DOWN button just BEFORE the rider is over the hole to ensure the bike moves downwards.
